from my own research on this matter about 60% of married men and 40% of married women have affairs, averaging about 80% of marriages at least one spouse has an affair. but only about 30% of these marriages end in divorce.
some books and/or websites claim that affairs do more good for marriages than harm. can't say that i personally agree with that.
bottom line people have affairs out of pure selfishness. most will excuse thier decision of having an affair by saying there were problems in the marriage, the marriage got too routinue and dull, sexual incompatibility and adjusting to having children (mom giving more attention to baby and being too tired, etc).
my own personal bottom line to it is that people today do not have coping skills to deal with relationships. partially due to so many of our parents having had divorces and not being a working example set for us. partially due to a society that caters to quick and easy satisfation created through fantasy, and rarely regarding anything sacred or lasting.

There is some speculation that the increasing number of extramarital affairs is because women are now able to gain economic freedom from working, and there for are able to detach themselves from relationships more easily - IE not worry about getting caught because they are not financially dependent. There are also more chances for women to cheat now because of increased time at work/ in the workforce. There are estimates that up to 60% of all spouses cheat, but it's difficult to confirm those numbers. I would estimate that at least 50% do because that is close to the divorce rate...

1. Lack of communication.
2. Tit for Tat: If the opposite partner is not taking the initiative to solve the problem then why should I.
3. By doing extra martial affaire justifying their state of mind, when actually they are becoming even more irresponsible by not try to solve rather sort the problem by its roots.
Marriage and its vows are not childs play, and there are committments made infront of GOD and both the parties should realize that learn/understand it and recall the vows made.
