Economically speaking, it was probably considered a waste of time. Slaves were slaves (in that time period) not because they were prisoners, but because they were considered an inferior race. You might teach an especially apt slave who seemed intelligent, but you wouldn't teach a regular slave because it was widely believed that a slave could never have more knowledge than the level of a 5-year-old white child, and thus what would be the point? At the time, it was assumed that such things were simply beyond their understanding.

because as roxanne said, knowledge is power
If slaves would know how to write and read they would know the situation they were in and would start revolts against their "owners"
They would be able to communicate with each other and decide on an action to stop slavery and that what the people didnt want to happen
But since it is the natural nature for people to seek knowledge, the slaves at that time found a way to communicate and they did start revolts

The same reason they give people crappy education now : to hold on to power . People should not take it for granted that they received the best they could get.

mixture, waste of time, some slaves were slaves from young age and working whole time, if the slave is uneduacated they don't know about much else . Educated slaves=revolts

It wouldn't be handy for a slave master if you can read and write and actually challenge things intellectually.

Strange though, many slaves were educated in Rome.

Same reason God didn't want Adam and Eve eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge. He wanted them to keep picking cotton.

I wouldn't keep a slave at all; I'd feel guilty having a maid.

Well would you want someone you control and posses to be smarter than you?

That's how revolts and revolutions start. Education and information.
