Today the new GM of the Angels Reagins traded Orlando Cabrera for John Garland of the White Sox...What do you guys think!? Did we get a fair deal on this move?

My Opinion.......... Is, we didn't, 1st of all "OC" is the best defensive shortstop in the game .986 field precentage and over 100 runs scored and 86 RBI's!! for John Garland I would have taken John Buerlhe maybe.... but Garland? not worth it! What does eveyone think or maybe this indicates more move by the Angels?

I usually agree with Craig - but I have to disagree with him here. Jon Garland is an average pitcher at best. He is NOT an innings eater. He had a great year in 2005, but only a decent year in 2006. His ERA is too high. He is not a strikout pitcher.
More important is his ability to "eat innings". That is not true. He does not. He will pitch you those innings, but give up earned runs in the process. I went to three games last year that I remember him being shelled and gone by the 5th inning.
I believe his best years are behind him. He is that guy who you see and say - I thought he was better.
The Sox got what they were looking for - a #2 hitter with a good glove. Uribe was the worst starting shortstop in the league. They have improved. Garland was in the last year of a contract - and he will be over-paid when it expires. The Sox had no interest in doing that. It was a good trade.

Cabrera is a great defensive shortstop, but I think some fans are overestimating his offensive abilities. His career OBP is a horrible .321, and he has almost no power. Sure, he scored 100 runs this season. but that's not a difficult thing to do when you bat second in the order. If he had any ability to get on base or hit for power, he'd easily have scored 120 with a guy like Vlad waiting to drive him home. Vlad, Figgins, Casey Kotchman, Howie Kendrick and Gary Matthews are all better offensive players than Cabrera - that's not just my opinion, it's based on actual numbers.

Garland isn't a staff ace, but he's a very good #2 or #3 starter who will eat up a lot of innings and won't have a lot of horrible outings. I think it's a lot easier to replace a bat like Cabrera than it is to find a pitcher of Garland's ability. I'm not an Angels fan, but I think you guys got a good deal today.

Omar - If the Angels can somehow land Miguel Cabrera without giving up a ton, you should be ecstatic. He's one of baseball's truly great young stars, and he could be on his way to a HOF career. Only 24 and he's already got almost 140 homers and I love that .940 OPS. They could shift Figgins over to short and let Cabrera have third - anything they lose defensively would be made up by the offensive gain Cabrera would provide. Tejada is certainly a good player and would help, but Cabrera is a better long-term option.

Good deal for the Angels. Quality pitching is hard to come by. Bats like OC's can easily be replaced.
Forget about Eckstien coming back to Anaheim, the Mets are preparing serious money for a run at Eck.

Maybe the Halos made to deal so not to confuse the radio announcers if they sign Miguel Cabrera? :)

I think the Angels didn't get enough in return. Jon Garland is overrated, and is a slightly above average pitcher. It's ironic in the sense that the Angels traded away Cabrera, who would have helped a groundball pitcher like Garland a lot. Mark Buehrle would have made more sense, and I think it was a dumb trade on the Angels' part, as they already have Jered Weaver, Kelvim Escobar, and John Lackey. They don't really need more starting pitching, and they lost one of their greatest offensive and defensive assets.

As a Yankee fan this trade did not send any alarms in my head. Jon Garland is a game 4 starter at best. Watch out for Seattle and Oakland to take over in the West. After getting swept by the Red Sox, all of a sudden Vlad and Lackey aren't so intimidating.

I think it is great!

The Angels need pitching! On the other hand the Angels need Orlando's bat in the linup.

On paper, it's a great deal for the Angels. I am just concerned about a good number 3 hitter in the lineup.

Who knows maybe the Halo's will pick up another good hitter!

Garland can pitch! No question about it!

thank god someone has a same opinion as me. i thought this trade was really bad for the angles. we already have john lackey and kelvim escobar and jered weaver and we clearly dont have the bats. OC was like our 3rd best hitter and the best fielding shortstop in the league. we could have got a better pitcher than garland. i heard that the reason they traded oc was b/c we are getting miguel cabrera and we need to find a position for brandon wood. but come on garland? i thought it was a bad trade

Everyone is underestimating John Garland's ability.

He had 18 wins in both 2005 and 2006.

Someone said he's no better than a 4th starter?? That's incorrect.
