If the condition only happens on braking and what you are feeling is a violent shaking of the steering wheel when braking then your front disc rotors are worn out-of-round. This is a very common as brake pads wear down and the rotors that they press against when braking become distorted from the heat of braking. Because the front wheels drive and steer the vehicle, the vibrations from braking will be transmitted up the steering wheel where you'll feel it. Dependign on how badly the rotors are warped the steering wheel can jerk or vibrate violently to give you the impression that the steering system is bad. You won't feel the vibration at lower speeds because the amount of energy being transformed during braking is not anywhere near what it is at higher speeds.

have the brake pads and rotors checked. You'll almost certainly find the rotors will need to be resurfaced to eliminate the vibrations in the steering.

During the brake inspection have the technician inspect the suspension system for any broken, bent or worn components in the event you're feeling something other than a brake vibration. make sure the power steering fluid reservoir is full.

Lastly, if you feel the car 'diving' to one side when braking or "wandering" at higher speeds when you are not braking then you have an alignment problem and not a brake problem. Its hard to interpret what your complaint is. If the car pulls to one side, check the tire pressure to make sure the tire is not low on air, and if the tries are okay and its not a brake problem then have the alignment checked.

hope that helps

New pads and rotors will fix you right up.and on your 2001 the front rotors should be the easy ones to change, unlike the 95-97.

You say sudden braking? You shouldn't suddenly brake unless in an emergency situation. It sounds like your brakes/drums/rotors could be all screwed up.
