some dude in N.York wants all the fast food chains to list all the calories of the food they serve. bigger menu boards that list the calories of all the food they serve. and who's going to pay for this added expense? you the consumer. and what about when ya git slapped up side the head by the guy behind ya, because he's hungry and you are taking 10 minutes to calculate the collieries of ya order. face it we know the food in places like McDonald's is not good for ya. why put more expense on these places that they will pass on to the consumer to tell the average person what they already know. that the food they serve is not good for you. why not just make the places they are targeting put up a big sign at the door.
WARNNING the food in this establishment may make ya blood pressure & cholesterol jump sky high, and your butt spread out as big as the fifth wheel on a peterbilt.
it would be cheaper on us people who don't have those problems.
just curious what ya think?

it's the dude that is like some kind of city commissioner over all the restaurants in Y.Y. City. I think its the same guy that got the trans fat laws passed. I may be wrong on that.

seems to me if you were concerned about making better choices you wouldn't go to a fast food restaurant in the 1st place.

The information is available already! It is posted in the restaurant! The socialist in NY wants to force the fast food restaurants to put the information on the menu board, because people are not making the choices that HE (the great and wondrous, smarter than the people, health expert) thinks they should make!
All this will do is clutter up the menu boards and make them harder to read!
Why should he get to decide how a private business is run? If people cared, they can find the information easily. Most people care about getting the food fast, and it tasting good!

Yes, people really care. However, I don't think just listing the calories on the menu is going to be very useful, I'd much rather just see pamphlets available in the front of the restaurant with the full nutritional content of all foods served. Not just calories. All ingredients and nutritional values.
Knowing that a restaurant has some unhealthy food choices does not mean people don't care what is in their food. We all have a right to know what is in our food, and should have the option of choosing based on that information.
You falsely assume that people who eat fast food are all unhealthy or uncaring, without taking into consideration that there is nothing wrong with occasional indulgence, or that people may have little choice in eating anywhere besides a fast food restaurant at certain times.
Additionally, certain foods are deceptively unhealthy. A salad may seem safe but it may have more fat and calories than a small burger. Knowing the content there is important in such a situation.
More information is always better than less information.

I think it has almost become manditory for fast food chains to list all of this. I used to think that by knowing whaty Mc D's and burger king listed i could guestimate other fast food, WRONG try whataburger, almost double the fat, calories blah balh ablah as the others. I do think it is a waste of consumer money to make the chains post this on the actual menu, but they should have an inexpensive to produce pamphlet to hand out for those who truly and really want and need to know. I never cared about calories, fat, carbs etc, but t recently was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, I need to know the SUgar content at certain times. I don't expect it to be on the menu per se, but if I ask it would certainly help if they had somethign to offer me so I can make a better food selection for my health

I think it's silly. He's just making trouble. If he was serious about helping people get and stay healthy, he'd want the same thing for ALL restaurants, not just the fast food ones. And, what about all the food in the grocery store?
He can't convince me that it's less healthy to eat fried food in a fast food place than it is in any other restaurant, or if you fry it at home!

I agree, What good is displaying all off theis so big when people are going to make poor food choices anyway? I know where the nutritional tables are in every restaurant. They are usually plastered on th wall, who doesn't know that there are more calories in a big mac than a grilled chicken sandwich with no mayo? I'll tell you, no one. They just don't care!

I think listing nutritional facts somewhere accessible is a good idea and it isn't that expensive for fast food chains to do. The menu board probably isn't the best place to put that sort of information, but a rack with pamphlets you can take with you is perfectly feasible. Starbucks does it.
Consider This:
Tall Gingerbread Latte = 200 calories
Tall Gingerbread Latte w/sugar-free syrup and non-fat milk = 90 calories
That difference is important to someone like me who likes to indulge sometimes but has to seriously watch what I eat. People don't understand that a plain hamburger may be fine to add into their diet, but when they add the cheese and the ketchup it becomes a poor choice. Minor details are important in health management, and educating people on what they are eating is a first step towards treating the obesity epidemic in this country.

i think the city of NY is trying to save small business by doing things like this to the chains.. deli's and other restaurants will not be required to do this posting.. anyone who cares about what they are eating will already be informed and posting calories will only confuse people...
nutrition should be a year long course for high school students if they want to make the next generation healthier.. combine it with home ec and teach people how to cook healthy too..

RoadKill55 why shouldn't restaurants be bound to the same labeling laws that packaged food companies are? And yes, some of us do care. If we know what is in our food, we can make better choices as to whether we want to eat it or not

I think people already know fast food is fattening, high in cholesterol & calories. The guy needs to quit beating a dead horse. It's an individual's right to choose how they want to eat.

Oh, I think you are lovely - beautiful turn of phrase, I agree entirely. Ok, I am Scottish, but the idea of taking kids to these places FOR A TREAT makes the mind boggle. The food is garbage, but I guess people must get addicted to it or are bog standard too lazy to cook nutritious food. Sorry, I have to laugh at your prose, you are so funny and have put in to words what I have been thinking and arguing about for years!!! Star, thumbs up and everything else up, flags. You OK.
