It may have cost him votes from the Republican base. The right wing of the party were not big fans of Communist China. But, it didn't matter. He buried George McGovern in the general election and won in a cake walk in the Electoral College vote that December.
However, I do think that trip to China wound up with Taiwan using a double agent to bring down Nixon via the Watergate scandal. One of those arrrested during that botched break-in at the DNC headquarters in the Watergate had been an agent of the U.S. in Taiwan some years earlier and was friends with Madame Chiang and others. He's the same one who taped the door the wrong way. That brought it to the attention of the security guard who called the police. The rest is history.

I remember that trip and yes I think that was a good reason he was re-elected... I know that is why I voted for him in 1972
