You would have to have one serious accent to make those sound alike... Ouch...

Nope...if we have to go back to phonetic symbols. gas has an "ae: sound...while guess has an invertd "e " sound..so it is quite obvious that they cant be the same....maybe if someone says it very fast in a very slang manner, it will sound that way....but imagine if someone says..."Gas who is coming? ", or " buy a litter of guess".........hmmm very vivid...so It may sound very similar only depending the speed of how it is said, but they don't sound the same at all!!!

When I say them, gas has a harder vowel sound, and I pronounce with kind of a schwa sound , I think.
Lots of people pronounce them the same, especially those with Southern accents

No. They have different vowel sounds. Only the initial and final consonant sounds are alike.
