All the Allmans..including the Duane Allman Anthology(1 & 2)..
my favourite song would be "Dreams" from the first album and "One Way Out" from "Eat a Peach"..one of the great rock guitar solos ever;Duane's solo on Clarence Carter's "Road of Love" off Anthology 1 is worth the price of admission alone;
"Wet Willie Live"-their take on "Grits ain't Groceries";
Area Code 615..featuring Charlie McCoy,Kenny Buttrey,Charlie Daniels etc.Great band as you would expect from those guys..forget now;
Charlie Daniels Band "Fire on the Mountain"-a live take "No Place Left to Go","Long Haired Country Boy" and "Orange Blossom Special";
Lynyrd Skynyrd.."One From the Road",a double live..all good..I like "Gimme Back My Bullets" whatever the critics say; Derek Truck's Band is wild..."Egg" & others....;
Drive-By Trucker's..."Richard Manuel Is Dead"..and "Southern Rock Opera" as some-one has already mentioned; My old buds..ZZ Top.."Rio Grande Mud","Tres Hombres","Tejas","Fandango"& "El Dueglo"(?);

Point Blank - Free Man
Baby - Long Legged Woman
38 Special - Four Wheels
Atlanta Rhythm Section - Doraville
Allman Brothers - In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
Potliquor - The Raven
Artimus Pyle Band - It Aint the Whiskey
Rossington Collins Band - Getaway
Black Oak Arkansas - When Electricity Came to Kansas
Hot Lanta - No One Won
Johnny Winter - Memory Pain
The Charlie Daniels Band - No Place to Go
Grinderswitch - Kiss The Blues Goodbye

There were many other southern bands like Bloodrock, Moving Sidewalks, Peace and Quiet, Hampton Grease Band, Fever Tree, 13th Floor Elevators, Corpus, etc. But they would fall under hard rock and psychedelic.

I'm a southern fried Canadian boy, and I love all that stuff man!

The Allman Brothers Band. But that may be because they're very bluesy as well as being a southern rock band.

Other than them, I enjoy Tom Petty (and the Heartbreakers) and Creedence Clearwater Revival. I'm not a big Lynyrd Skynyrd fan though, although I do like some of their songs, and use to like "Free Bird" a lot.

From those main three bands, my favorite songs from each of them respectively are: "Whipping Post", "American Girl", and "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?"

Love the Allman Brothers best (based on the fact that I've got 4-5 of their CDs), but Lynryd Skynyrd is great, too. Got a couple of their CDs.

For the Allman Bros, I'd say get "Beginnings" to see if you like them. It's their first two albums re-released together. Also really like "Eat a Peach" and Duane Allman's "Anthology". Rounding out my collection is their 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection 'best of' CD. They have a great southern rock / jazzy thing going on that is totally unique and wonderful.

P.S. Also like Charlie Daniels Band.

I doubt I can broaden your horizons, but I'm a huge Tom Petty fan. I basically love anything Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers does and Tom's new solo album Highway Companion is amazing (he's still got it!) but my personal favorite right now is Lost Children, Down South, Something in the Air and Even the Losers.

Ummm hello?? Pantera anybody? Pure down home Texas Heavy friggin' Metal!! One of the best bands of the past 20 years. Ok, so not quite "classic-style southern rock". But neither was Skynyrd before they re-invented it.

RIP Dimebag
