Jim Crow laws were enforced between 1876 and 1965in the southern states. They mandated "separate but equal" status for black Americans. This led to treatment and accommodations that were almost always inferior to those provided to white Americans.
Jim Crow comes from the minstrel show song "Jump Jim Crow" written in 1828 and performed by Thomas Dartmouth "Daddy" Rice, a white New Yorker and the first popularizer of blackface performance.
