I have a 1997 BMW 740i with 78K miles that I bought about a year ago and it has been shifting a little rough through all the gears lately (it's a 5-speed automatic). However, it only seems to shift hard between 2000 and 3000 RPM (about). If I'm accelerating very slowly or if I give it a lot of gas, it shifts perfectly smooth. I recently had the water pump replaced. I don't know if that would have anything to do with the problem, but it started shifting funny shortly after that repair. What could the problem be? I'm trying to sell the car soon and don't want to scare away any potential buyers. Everything else about the car is absolutely perfect. I don't need to replace the transmission do I?

Check the fluid level it's probably low. More than likely the fluid and filter have never been changed which might be a good idea to do.

Try checking the transmission fluid first. That may be all it needs.
