This is so awesome. He's been playing hockey for god knows how long. He recently is playing for virginia tech university, and has received a letter from the NHL stating that he is the first one on the list for the fifth round of the draft. If not the Detroit Redwings, he said he'd like to play for the San Jose Sharks. How exactly does that work?

Bullsh*te!

1. The NHL doesn't send letters out to people
2. Teams talk to players but don't tell them that they will draft them in the 5th round

Having spend the majority of my life chasing teenagers around North America to watch them play hockey, I know how the system works.

If a team/scout is interested in a player, they are allowed to talk to the player, but no promises of drafting can be made.

The National Hockey League is an umbrella entity for the thirty teams, and does not draft players.

Unless a team is drafting #1, they have no idea who will be available, especially in the 5th round

The teams won't know until June when they draft. The Red Wings might not even have a pick in the 5th round this year.

Green, any North American player who is not a professional, and will be 18 by September 15, 2008, but will not have reached their 20th birthday by September 15, 2008 will be draft eligible. If they are older than that, they are free agents and are free to sign with any team that wants them on any date.

1.) I highly doubt it. He's a world class player who belongs in the NHL. He had 66 points last season, and he didn't even play all the games. A player of that level is going to be in the NHL. 2.) A fancy 18th floor! I'm Chinese, and my parents are from Hong Kong. Take it from me, Chinese people are VERY superstitious and look for coincidences and things like that. 8 is a very important number (hence the olympics began on 8/8/08, the ceremony was at 8:08pm, and things like that). So an 18th floor in China is going to be pretty nice! I've never been back home though :( I would love to go. 3.) Probably not. With 18 players, there were 4 lines of 3 forwards and 3 lines of 2 defensemen. So with 20 players, there will be 4 lines of forwards and 4 lines of defensemen. That would make a line of 5 players, which kind of works out. I don't think it's a big deal. 4.) 18 seconds of the NHL finals. I don't like field hockey, and definitely not porn!! 5.) 18 in 34 days! When I turn 18, I'll drive all my friends legally lol. In New Jersey you don't get your provisional license till 17, and you're only allowed to drive 1 family member and/or 1 non-family member. Of course nobody follows this law, but at least when I'm 18 it won't be illegal. And I'll turn 18 by the election, so I'm going to vote. 6.) The penalty is four minutes, which technically is a double minor. But it is redundant.

There is no way that any NHL team is going to invest the time and money into scouting an ACHA hockey team. Since you are apparently not aware, ACHA is club level college hockey, it's not even a varsity sport. The top ACHA Division 1 teams in the country would be competitive with the average NCAA Division 3 team. Virginia Tech is an ACHA Division 2 team with a .500 record no less. The highest level of pro hockey played to date by a former Virginia Tech player is the ECHL. The most recent was a former goaltender who was signed to practice and act as the backup goaltender for South Carolina. He was signed because the starting goaltender has appendicitis.

Bottom line: Do not come here and make exaggerated statements such as this. The people here know their stuff and you will be called on the carpet for it rather quickly.

Simply put, I think someone is pulling his leg.
The NHL scouts do not send letters, and they sure aren't scouting that school/league. In addition, this is November...if he was drafted last year he would have known via phone call (I've had friends drafted) and there are no ways to predict when the teams will draft this year...so sorry, he has a cruel friend playing a trick on him.

This is the funniest thing I have read in a long long time. Virgina Tech is now a major hockey school. You sure he didn't get a letter from Dubbya, telling him to go to Iraq?

I think there is some misunderstanding here. Its illegal to inform an amateur player your intent to draft them, especially in the form of a hard document. Perhaps your cousin has a cruel sense of humor.

Haha, you're not telling the truth!

PS Red Wings Suck! lol

~

Well, it might not be bullsh*t, but I'm sure that the letter was misunderstood. Maybe it was a letter from the NHL, but it was not about drafting. LITY is usually right on these things, and after all he was a scout, so he should know what he's talking about.

~~

Hey, I know the Red Wings don't suck, it's just meant figuratively.

~~~
Jealous of the Red Wings? The team with the oldest, slowest, players??!? LMAO! The Avs are a showtime team; high scoring, many star players, very fun to watch. The Wings are boring to watch, why would I be jealous of them? And plus, I hate them, really bad too. I think I have a problem...
"Hi my name is Mike, and I am a Red Wing hater."
*group collectively* "Hiiiiii Miiiiike"
lol
I don't think the Hokies have EVER produced a player that drafted by a NHL and I don't think that's about to change w/ your cousin.
