The space was basically reserved more for supplies, cargo, & the guns. The beds for the crew were based on their rank. A poor regular sailor will be given a hammock to sleep in that can be stored away when not needed to sleep in. they would sleep in the same area that the guns were at, where they also had eaten, and hung out at. An Officer will be given a swinging box. It was in a more quieter place because the officers must be seperated from the normal men when they eat, sleep, or go to the bathroom. Now why dose everyone get a hammock or the swinging box? So you have a place to go into when it is time to throw you overboard when you are DEAD weight. The officers will be put in their box given lead shot and some cannon balls so you go down, and nail a lid on and throw you overboard. The sailor will get the same treatment but is wraped in his hammock instead of getting a box. On a ship, use everything onboard to its fullest potential. Admaral Nelson used his bed as his final resting place even if it was on dry land.

You'd have a hammock to call your own and a canvas bag for personal possessions. Only the captain had a bed. Common crew slept below decks. The junior officers were crammed into one cabin and the captain had a large cabin that also served as his office and an officers mess if it suited him.

Oh, the cook slept in the galley. The cabin boy slept in captain's cabin most of the time.

Watch the Hornblower series from A&E. The British warships are two centuries after your galleons, but it'll still give you an idea of the lifestyle.

There was very little space, so it was cramped, dark and smelly - they usually had the livestock nearby too. On some ships you took turns sleeping in the same bunk to save up on space.

Other than for the Captain, or any dignitaries who happened to be aboard, horrific.
