Like any genre. It's controversial. Where the cross over or birth began can be sketchy and there isn't always a definitive line.
But the most well recognized is Black Sabbath. As they are un doubtable metal and are so consistently throughout there work.
There are some early bands that CAN be considered metal but its controversial. Its 11pm local time so im off to bed.

In 1968, Blue Cheer released remake of a song called Summertime Blues that many consider the first true heavy metal recording. Steppenwolf released Born to Be Wild in January of 1968. Other "heavy metal" band that released "metal" albums in 1968 include The Yardbirds, Iron Butterfly (who can forget In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida?) and Led Zeppelin.
Led Zeppelin was probably the most influential of the early metal bands. The released their debut album in 1969.

Slade? Iron Maiden? Deep Purple? Metallica? What was considered metal back in the 60's or 70's might not be today.
