If one domestic partner assaults the other, it used to be called assault. Unfortunately, the victim often refused to press charges vs. the perpetrator. Victims of domestic violence often display symptoms that resemble the "Stockholm Syndrome," which involves identifying with their abuser. Victims of dv often believe that they can change their abuser, and when the abuser beats them, the victim believes that she has "failed" to change the abuser. (Male victims also wish to avoid the stigma attached to being physically abused by their wives or girlfriends, but the majority of domestic violence victims are female.)

That's what draws the abuser and victim into a relationship to begin with: both think that love and control are the same thing.

Many jurisdictions stopped calling it assault and started calling it domestic violence. DV laws permit cops to press charges whether the victim agrees or not.

Your kidding right?

It is not acceptable in society to hit or abuse your spouse, it is against the law because it is wrong to assault anyone. Many years ago, it wasn't against the law and there was even a law that said you could beat your wife as long as the stick you used was no bigger than your thumb. Hence, the phrase "rule of thumb".

Because you are not allowed to put your hands on anyone in anger. You are not allowed to commit acts of violence against other people. Just because that person is your wife or partner does not change that.

It's a marriage license....not a pink slip (owner ship papers).

I think the inclusion of the word "violence" pretty much answers your question.....

Clearly, you've never been a 7 year old watching your mother get the crap beaten out of her by your stepfather.....

It's in the constitution - remember the life..liberty and the pursuit of happiness....that's why it's against the law. No one has the 'right' to beat another; verbally abuse another against their will. Period. Punishable. Illegal.

Because, I seriously doubt you would like me to beat you within an inch of your life because I had a bad day, you came late, didn't have dinner, or any other reason.
