It's not "necessary" but it's definitely another precaution you can take to make sure you don't end up pregnant. However, I totally understand that it's not just an easy thing to start birth control.
Condoms, if used correctly, can be VERY effective, but you HAVE to use them correctly. If condoms are not used correctly they can break, and that in itself is enough panic and stress to make anyone freak out. You can also use a spermicide with the condom, to make it even more effective. There are some spermicides on the market -- some are foams, some jellies/gels. These can be applied to the outside and inside of the condom, and the woman can apply it inside of her body.
But just beware, sometimes people can be sensitive to the Nonoxynol-9 in the spermicides and can experience a tingling/burning sensation, which is unpleasant but usually goes away when you wash it off.

I'm a member of a GPA club, and if you dnt know what that stands for its Governors Program on Abstinence!!! And its where teens say no to sex before marriage, What we do is teach other teens about the STDS that are out there! There is only one full proof method to an unwanted pregnancy and that's ABSTINENCE, if you do go through with having sex with your boy friend and don't get pregnant their is still the risk of contracting an STD, did u know 1 out of every 4 teens have a sexually transmitted disease and don't even know it, that's real statics too... Buy using a condom u are in the 20% or getting pregnant, I dnt want to scare you are anything just wanted to infom you there are bigger risks out there then just an unwanted pregnancy!!! And Im glad to see you are thinking out side the box and thinking about "what if". Vriginity is a gift a one time gift, once its gone your will never have it back... and if you dont want to get pregnant that just kinda shows ya that you might not be ready for the step in the realtionship, sex is not just physical it has a greater emotional bond too!!! I dnt want to sound stuck up or anything its just that sex links to more than just a feeling!!! Once agin i dnt wanna scare ya or anything, just letting ya know whats up... You can also go to your local health care clinic and theyy will tell you more about bc and condoms, and I think u can go to them and their not allowed to contact your parents if ask for bc or condoms, if thats a factor, im not for sure on that one so dont quote me!!! Just choose what you feel is right and what is best for u and ur boyfriend.

There are back up methods that you can and should use with a condom if you want to be 100% safe. Foam, gels, sponges...all over the counter and added protection. I have personally had a condom come off too soon twice, so I wouldn't trust it myself. If you are serious with the guy, why not try the pill or something anyway? Periods are easier or gone, no worries...It is a shame for a beautiful thing between two people to be lessened because of worries over a stupid piece of rubber.

Also use a second line of defense, like a spermicide or a barrier method, like the "Today Sponge."

If you use a lubricant, be careful what kind you use, as some will weaken a condom. KY jelly is okay.

There is ALWAYS a chance any kind of birth control will fail. NOTHING but abstinence is 100%. But I used the double line of defense for years, and I never got pregnant.

Good luck. And good for you for being responsible.
Try this: Condom + Sponge + Spermicide

necessary no, good backup yes, also be aware of the proper way to put a condom on, as well as genital to genital contact with or without penetration could also lead to pregnancy pre-ejaculate is more potent than the actual ejaculate. Another form of back up is spermicidal jelly water based, though with this cares a higher risk of std's if the condom broke or fell off it does happen. That 99.9% effective assumes that it is properly applied and griped upon removal as it no longer as tightly held in place
On another note be sure you are ready emoationaly not a judgment not even a question, just a little reminder, and good sound advice.

No method of B/C is 100% fool proof. Take the pill/shot, whatever anyway, even if he is using a condom. Condoms break. The more types of B/C you use, the less chance you have of becoming pregnant.
Or, not to be an @$$hole or anything, practice abstinence. That is the only way to ensure you don't become pregnant!

It is definitely an *extremely* good idea! Condoms can break, slip, fail etc... You should definitely look into other methods of birth control as a second line of defense. Talk to your doctor.

(btw: good for you two for using a condom. If you do go on birth control be sure to keep using a condom to protect from STDs)

Condoms are not 100% sure. Why are u giving it up now? Are u in love? Will he mary you? Your body is a temple. Any man that touches you should be well worth it. Get on birth control if u chose to have sex. I am 30 and say wait a little longer. Be sure you are ready for this.

You probably should if you really don't want to be pregnant. The condom could be defective, or could break, etc. that stuff happens all the time. And, if you take birth control, you'd have to be taking it for awhile before it would really be effective. And even still, if you're on the pill, there's a chance you could get pregnant.

if you use both, then it is a better chance of being protected. its better than just a condom, but it also has the same percentage of possible pregnancies. and i would recommend that since you don't want to get pregnant, then don't take the chance at all until you are ready to support a child of you own. (the best possibility would be marriage and then children, so that your baby has a full time father, but YOU do what feels right to YOU) good luck!

ps
just enjoy being a teenager-you don't want to worry about an unwanted pregnancy.
