My wife passed away a few years ago, and ever since it collects dust, (can't imagine why). But my ? is why and how do I prevent it? Other than the obvious. I do not have central air and I still live by myself plus my Huskie whom(or is it who) is mostly outside. Lee

Dusting is the main solution.

A lot of dust comes from dead skin cells of humans and animals, so the more time you and your dog spend outside the better. Also keeping yourself and you dog clean will help. Consider using moisturizers so your skin doesn't dry and crack off as much.

Some dust may come from soot and fireplaces. Make sure the chimneys are clean. Also close the flue whenever the fire is not burning, and get the ashes out ASAP.

You may also want to clean your shoes before you go in.

A lot of dust also comes from dust in the air outside. It may be time to change the filters on whatever AC you have. Since you have no central air, I would also make sure that the units you have are sealed into the windows well. Put curtains up in front of the windows you use a lot. Lace ones that are tight, and billowy ones will make a good combo for catching dust. You'll have to wash them regularly of course. Blinds have a lot of surface area to trap dust on, but cleaning them is quite a bit more intense than tossing curtains in the washing machine. Things outside of course don't especially need to be washed: wind chimes, window bars, and bushes can all help to filter dust out before it gets in... up to a point...

Lastly, you'll want to dust areas that are likely to collect dust and then spew it back out. Cieling fan blades, and the tops of doors are especially good at this.

Unless you are in a vacuum, there are always airborn dust particles...the Husky, even though is mostly outside, will add to the dust particles especially wqhen he comes in bringing some of the dust with him...BTW, most dust particles are invisible but when enough are together, they form dust.

Most of what is 'dust' is dead human cells. If you live in a home, you will collect dust. It may just be that your wife cleaned and dusted more than you do now.
