They are "Projecting". People act means towards others because they feel insecure about themselves and they need that "quick fix" of empowerment. This is actually human nature and we all do it in one way or another it's just that when we do it to each other there is an issue. If we realize that we all do this for a quick ego fix when can ask the more important question. What other ways can we will this "Quick fix" need of empowerment?

I do this a lot with video games. When I feel insecure I will play one of my roomates action games (something I can beat) and take it out on it, hence feeling less insecure and better in the ego.

i think that might be a part of it for some, they are hard on the outside because they have really been hurt or really scared in the inside...it can be a form of protection for themselves that leads them coming off like jerks to people that don't know or understand them...and some just dont have a reason and are just jerks because they can be...dont care too much about other people be true to you!

I can relate to jerks bc/ I am one a lot of the time. But a sincere jerk who tries not to be so jerky is usually just normal. However, huge jerks who either don't know or don't care they're jerks - - well, they probably need a little more love than the rest of us - and yes, they're self absorbed, but mostly insecure.

Depends how long you knew the person
at first when you just might seen a new person who might be mean, she/he might be really shy

Also sometimes mean people have problems in their lives that they call for attention and be all snobby

i think these *jerks* need some good influences and friends to become nicer

I think that they are sometimes shallow and think too much of themselves, or they have some problem, say at home, or at a sport team, and unleash thier frustration or sadness out at other people.

Sometimes. There is always a reason why people act the way they do. You have to think what would make them be so mean. Did they grow up around it, so it's just the way they learned how to defend themselves?
Other times people are just plain MEAN. The times where people just want their way and don't care about anyone else is just them being immature.

They're usually insecure of themselves, yes shallow too. But other then that--- it honestly depends WHY the person is being mean.. people have different reasons for acting the way they do.

When people are mean, they are currently thinking of themselves trying to get their feelings out so that they don't bottle them up inside. I think jerks are just purely evil.
