I heard that they went from free love to the most capitalistic, $$ grubbing "me me me" generation of all. Is this true? That seems to defeat the purpose of Woodstock and all that.

You are largely right. Some of them have remained perennial hippies to this day. However, a good many of them were not real "flower children" at all but were into the hippy scene simply to avoid the draft during the Vietnam War.

As soon as the war and the draft (or conscription) both ended in 1973, many of them cut their hair, donned corporate suits and began playing the Wall Street game.

Earlier Americans had been mostly willing to serve in the military when their turn came around without hesitation.

However, many Americans born after about 1940 grew up in affluence and excessive comfort. They didn't have the same toughness and fighting spirit that older generations of Americans raised in poverty did. They did not want to fight in any more wars.

The fact that the Russian, Chinese and Korean communists had all been our Allies during World War II - against Hitler and the Japanese - also made it difficult to convince many younger Americans that Communism was an enemy.

well, if they are 'ex-hippies' then they wouldn't really carry on the reform very well since the 'ex' implies that they no longer share those same beliefs.
However, I would also say that the children of those people and the children of today are far more me, me, me than prior generations. Perhaps it is part of our upbringing by all of those ex-hippies.
