Generally, how much space would a rough carpenter leave in between the rough 2 x 4 door opening and the prehung door? I would imagine only an inch or so, but I'm not sure. Thanks.

RO for a prehung 2668 (2'6" x 6'8")door is 32" x 82"

The opening should be 32 1/2" wide and 82 1/2" high. That leaves 1" of play on the sides to adjust the door unit to plumb and enough head space for adjustment and for the door casing to cover the opening with room to nail to header.

Add Two inches on the width so it would be 32" wide and add 2-1/2 " in height. a total hieght of 82-1/2"

R.O. (rough opening) for 2'-6" x 6'-8" door == 2'8" x 6'10-1/2"
this allows for shims to plumb and level the door in the opening and gives clearances for floorings and trim covers all gaps later.

the one thing no one mentions is assuming the rough in is plumb straight up and down ,,,,check that 1st in to days world of inexperienced carpenters check that before thinking it should be 82-82 1/2x32-32 1/2

Split the 10 between maple and Chris, or at least say thank you to both. Smiles

yes , you are correct. normally an inch to adjust square and plumb. most rough openings are close but not perfect and the extra room allows for shimming.
