Some comets may pick up enough momentum falling toward the Sun to break free of the Sun's gravity entirely and wander the galaxy. Long-period comets are objects that get perturbed out of the Oort cloud from 20,000 to 50,000 AU out. One such comet, Hale-Bopp, which put on a grand show in 1997, has a 4000-year orbit estimated to take it 371 AU away from the Sun. Periodic comets such as the Comet Holmes currently on view stay much closer in - Holmes doesn't go beyond the orbit of Jupiter.
