i also agree with what "D and G Gifts Etc" said, but violent demonstration do encourage rough behavior at a younger age
this is where parenting comes into play.
its not TV, its what they watch and at what age.
if their watching Scarface at age 3 then the parents have a harder time control the child than if he watches it at age 13, in which it is harder for them to be influenced.
its all in good parenting, this is why parental guidance systems are made
even though the parental guidance system is meant to guide parents not to be followed like a law because every child develops differently

I don't neccesarily believe that violent shows, games or music causes children to be violent. I think it has more to do with their parental situation. If we are to assume that violence on tv causes violence in children then wouldn't all children be violent? If you have two groups of children that watch the same exact violent programs, play the same exact violent games and listen to the same music should both of these groups be violent. Now lets assume that the first group has parents that take an interest in their kids, Ask the tough questions and give the tough answers. The other group the parents allow their children to be disrespectful, controlling, demanding. There are no consequences for any wrong doing that the child does. You are more likely to have a voilent child emerge from Group B. Why. It has nothing to do with the tv, radio or games. It has to do with lack of responsibilty. If a child is not taught to be responsible for their actions and does not suffer any consequences for their actions. They then believe that they are entitled and allowed to do anything including violence with out there being any consequences, So in order to eradicate or lessen violence in children Parents need to learn how to teach responsibility and also to be more responsible themselves. When adults stop passing the buck and start taking responsibility their children will also.

Children are just that children, they have to learn about reality from non reality. All they see is that a guy can be shot or hurt on one channel and the same guy different channel is perfectly fine so they reason that people can do use weapons and such and be okay because the television offers a reality for them. I would like to expand your idea to say that television in general has a negative effect on all of society. I think certain ads damage our youths minds for instance every few minutes a weight -loss or diet plan ad flashes by or a Viagra, or sexual enhancement ad, not to mention some of the other shows that are not right for young minds to view.

D and G continued...?
I believe motherese (baby talk) and related immature tones and modes of communication are specifically at fault here.
I can handle ANY fantasy (treat it as such), and so can my seven-year-old niece (No, I do not expose her to excessive adult anything).
I talk straightforwardly to her about EVERYTHING!
I never, ever leave her guessing or wondering, not ever.
I think children live with too much mystery...about everything about themselves and about everything about their caregivers and their caregiver's wills, ways, and intentions...not all, but too many families simply do not communicate well.
That's where its all at...plain old plain talk.
