I heard about there were people trying to make a city that was entirely deaf friendly as an experimental community but I don't remember anything about it or if it even came to exist. Anyway, do you think its a good idea?

The idea was abandoned. I don't know why, but I think it was financial.

Deaf communities have existed before. Martha Vineyard was a Deaf community for a very long time. There are pockets of communities where Deaf people choose to live because of specific opportunities that are available.

I don't think any community that isolate people of one kind is going to last in the long term.

I think that's an idea that will be very hard to put into reality, at least in the longterm. Deaf people could have hearing children for example. There are many mixed couples (deaf person married to a hearing person). There would always be some hearing people as well. Plus, I doubt they would have legal grounds to forbid hearing people from moving into that city. They might manage to make a city where the majority is deaf, but an all-deaf city is virtually impossible in the longterm. The city could be deaf friendly though, without everyone in it being deaf.

You are asking two different questions. WhIch one do you want answered?
I asked a question like this about another group of people and had a good answer that convinced me we need diversity in any community. I like diversity and tolerance anyway. So,
No I don't think everyone being deaf is the best idea.
However, Being 'entirely deaf friendly' as in the body of your question is a great idea. Better yet, make it friendly for every group of differences.

No - I think it is a terrible idea!

I don't think any *community* should isolate people; and why in the world - DEAF PEOPLE????

GEEZZ, get real. Being deaf isn't even a disability! It is simply a way of being. The deaf people I know certainly don't consider themselves disabled and many of them live larger lives than I do and I'm a hearing person.

I know a lot of deaf ppl as my mate is deaf. Sign language is not different than learning any other language - if you want to communicate with a deaf person - that is your choice - just like to learn Japanese or Spanish, etc...

Deaf people who have a chip on their shoulder MAY want their own community but that is the same as gay activists -- why can't everyone just bloody well try and get along!

Sorry - bit of a rant there :}

Seems like a burglars holiday...

But whenever possible every community should be as "friendly/accomodating" as possible to any disadvantaged members of its community

I think any town that caters to only one subcultural group has it's assets and draw backs. The concept was for everyone to use or be able to use SIGN LANGUAGE and that would be kewl to me (I sign.) lol

It would be like, gee, I don't know, asking everyone who is an American to be able to speak English?
