I've been retired for a couple of years, I never was big on working; the last job I had was painfully boring. But now I can't figure out if I'm bored because I'm depressed, or depressed because I'm bored. I'm 63, and health wise I'm still able to scoot. In fact, I had a physical today and was declared to be still alive, so I think I'm OK with that. But jeez, what to do? Winter's coming on; I can't ride the Harley anymore this year, and I don't ice fish. I think I'm gonna whack out.

Viagra? Hmm, does that have something to do with, ......hmm, what was that activity called again?

Thumbs up to everybody; great answers, even the viagra suggestion - (I'd probably have a heart attack). Now, with my ADHD addled brain, I have to decide which is best. (Do you know how hard that is for a guy with that affliction?)

I believe in the maxim that only a bore person is bored!
That is if you are intelligent and active with a purpose, you can
spend your life meaningfully at any age in wealth and poverty and in health and sickness.

If you can read and write, you will never be bored. Get the list of 100 best novels from the internet and see how many you have missed or 100 best movies, how many of them you have seen?

Think about our purpose of being here. Nothing in this world appears purposeless. So with what purpose man was
sent on earth? Think and write your views on a piece of paper.

All religions claim they they are the Only True Religion. But which of them is really true?

Is it possible to distribute income justly in the society, yet keep the incentive to enterpreneurship alive?

The world's population is now over 6 billion. But how many of them will be remembered after their death? Can you be one of them?

Think my friend. You will find an important work which only
YOU could do.

What great people you all are! Super ideas. Myself, if I had three lifetimes, I don't think I could do all and learn all and see all I want. Neeterjean had two very balanced ideas that I totally agree with. 1) Look outside yourself. Focus on yourself invites boredom. Conversely, 2) learn how truely talented and wonderful you are. If you know that deep inside, you will not be bored because you'll know you have much to give to others, which is not at all boring. If you've been told all your life that you aren't much, now is your chance to disprove it. Be anything you want. You're never too old, but if you wait until tomorrow to start something, you'll be a day older than you are today.

Our local YMCA is constantly looking for volunteers to drive their little white buses that take seniors back and forth to doctor appointments, outpatient surgeries or even to get groceries when necessary.Plus, as the others have said, there is a Meals on Wheels program. Volunteer to ring the bellss for the Salvation Army this year. This time of the year, there are all kinds of people and groups needing help.It will be Harley weather again before you know it.

Motivation is the key word. If you lose your motivation, you might as well give up.
My Partner has not worked for 3 years, through no fault of his own. He is 60. I work, 5 days a week 7 till 1 but, because he has lost his motivation, I come home, he has done nothing all day, and I think "why the hell should I do anything?"
His lack of motivation rubs off on me. The only interest he has is his 28 yr old Suzuki and his 24 yr old Kawasaki, as you say, winter is coming on! It doesn't bode well for the next
4 months! Good luck anyway, I am sorry I whinged!

Oh, hey.. I desperately need a fence..I'm having trouble digging the holes for the posts..c'mon over.. lol

You can ride your Harley all year here..and there is no ice, so no need to fish.

I have my own little business and I find it overwhelming at times, but I'm never bored.. I think the rest of the posts that suggested that you start a business have the right idea.

Start volunteering. There's lots of folks who desperately need help, and us younger seniors still have the ability to do things to help.

Community Action Agencies always need help, as does the hospital. Nursing homes, Meals on Wheels, soup kitchens.
I volunteer for stuff in our church. I teach the kids there.

I am busy enough to keep the boredoms away. I am happy and healthy, and get out of bed eagerly every day.

My brother, newly retired, is bored out of his mind. Complains. I suggested volunteer work, he says not if he doesn't get paid for it. Well, I say he can just stay bored, or go out and find some little job.

You have to have a reason to get up every day.

Volunteer -- learn something new;i.e art drawing painting and the like - music learn an instrument - take dancing lessons, bowling, ice fishing, wood carving, writing (poetry/short stories or maybe memiors), Hike, travel. Go for the gusto, the good parts just beginning -- it's time to do what ya wanna, not what a gotta -- the doin for others makes you feel great (kinda selfish way of lookin at it, but true)

I had a great-uncle who once told me, "Child, as long as you love reading and learning and Jesus Christ, you never need be bored in your lifetime." Used to think that was all hogwash...but found it to be utterly true lol.

Boredom for all of us tends to set in when our thoughts focus inwardly, on self. When we purposely will ourselves to think of others, to set out to serve others in need in some way (even if it only be for companionship or a ride to the doctor!), then boredom leaves because we have purpose given us by God Almighty, which is to love one another.

You sound like a really great person. I bet there are tons of people out there who woud just love knowing you. Have you considered volunteering, being a mentor or a tutor to a young person, doing errands for shut-ins, helping out at a local shelter, pursuing a long-put-off hobby, or even perhaps taking up some of those books you never had the time to read, and enjoying that time now? Perhaps you have an artistic bent, or can sing, or are handy with the tools of a tradesman such as a carpenter, mason, or so forth. Think about what God's gifted you with a natural talent for or love of, then go share it with others, perhaps even turn it into a real business. Life is GREAT. Don't let boredom rob you.

One final thought: Have you learned, in your lifetime, to really and truly enjoy YOUR OWN COMPANY? Can you be by yourself and not fall into boredom? You can, if you realize that you have gifts and abilities, and that there are things you would and CAN enjoy doing. If you're snowed in all winter and can't ride that bike, and if you're handy mechanically, go to a junkyard, buy a whooooole lotta bits of this and that, and BUILD yourself another bike in your garage...order a few catalogs and see if you can find some new "doodads" for yourself, your bike, your spouse (if you're married)...read. Write...be daring and go audit a class in something that's always interested you, but for which you've never had time. it is NEVER EVER boring to learn new things! And if you only audit through a local or community college, no big money tossed if it doesn't turn out to be your cup of tea...just keep trying new things, meeting new faces, learning new stuff...personally, I think you sound like someone who would be a lot of fun to be around. Share that!

have you considered opening your own business? The Internet is a perfect venue for the cottage industry...find what you love doing, do it for money! IT doesn't take a lot of smarts to write a good web site, (use Front Page or Dream Maker), publish on an ISP, get your meta tags in order, and submit to search engines. Tinker with the tags and the site until it appears on page one of the search engines...retail, wholesale, what have you, you can make a damned good amount of money doing exactly what you love doing...I cannot imaging being retired, and I am 66! I own my own business, love what I do, take time whenever I want, have an excellent staff, and things seem to putter along with or without me...granted, they putter one hell of a lot better with me..but I take off when I want, and I hate boredom more than you do! IF you are really interested, contact me personally and I will fill you in with the do's and don'ts. Hook up with Visa/MasterCard/AmEX/Discover, charge on line, the money goes directly into your bank account....I started my own about 10-11 years ago, and ....well, let's just say that I live in Orange County, CA...nuff said? I have time to do exactly what I want to do, have money to do it with. AND I love life. Good luck and the best with whatever you decide to do. As for me, I cannot imagine not working...I would be bored to death! Phil

You need more activities. Get a part time job. Join a senior center and get involved. Volunteer. Spend more time on YA with your senior friends. Go out on dates. At this point in your life you can do anything you want!
