I don't live in the USA.. I live in Canada and I've taken the Greyhound. Go ahead take a trip by yourself. You might want to take a self defense course first though! I lived in Port Arthur Ontario and often took a short trip Out to Dorion Ontario!
Now I'm Enderby BC even though many people are nastier here there are some that are friendlier. I often take a trip by Bus to Salmon Arm or Vernon
Yes I took a self defense course.. Kung Fung but never needed to use it! 1st rule of Kun Fung is if you can get out of fighting then get out of it!
Remember the Word can be mightier than the Sword! Always try a peaceful solution first! The summer time one can Tent out in the Bushes or if you don't want to do that anytime of the year there are hostels in most cities of Canada. Probably in the USA too!

If you can afford it, consider the Ojai Valley Inn and Spa in Ojai, California. A gorgeous spot for a solo vacation, and a beautiful mountain town to explore with lots of cultural activities. This valley was and still is sacred to the Chumash Indians, considered a mystical healing spot.

I would and I have, because I'm a single guy and if I want to go off somewhere for some peace and quiet, I'll do it. I've been to Maine, the Bahamas, the Keys, and a few other places as well. It's nice to be able to do whatever you want and go wherever you feel like going without having to cater to anyone else's wants or needs.

Great question. I'm in the same boat... I was making get-away plans for my birthday, but the friends I've invited are making me second guess it all.
Honestly, I'm afraid to go by myself. I don't want to stick out as a tourist, AND a woman alone.

I would not go to Detroit or New Orleans. Just plain trash.
San Antonio is a fun and clean city.
