There are three reasons why I star questions:
1) I star them if I think they're interesting.
2) I star them if I think one or more of my contacts might want to read and/or answer them for whatever reason.
3) I star them if I think I might want to look back on them (or the answers I've given) in the future. (Much easier to "sift" through starred questions than all those that you've answered.) (I realize that I could use my private watch list for this purpose. And I do. But the difference is that I don't answer the questions that I save to my watch list. Every question that I star is either answered by me or commented on once the question is resolved.)
As for giving thumbs up:
I thumbs up every answer that I think is "good". When I say "good", I'm not only referring to answers that I agree with or those that I think accurately answer the questions... I'm also referring to answers that are well-read and seem logical and thought out. So there are often times when I give thumbs up to answers that I completely disagree with. (And, of course, I also thumbs up answers that I think are funny and/or entertaining. ☺)
I never give thumbs down. It doesn't bother me that other users do it. But I just don't feel comfortable giving thumbs down.

Well I thumbs up every good answer and thumbs down the bad ones, can't help myself. I don't star "every" question I answer just the ones I want either everyone else to look at or I want to keep track of for whatever reason.

I only star interesting questions, or something that I think my contacts would be better at answering than me. I thumbs up every good answer.

Oh yes...I go on thumbs up sprees. Of course they have to be good answers. If there was a violation for giving thumbs up I would have gotten kicked out of Yahoo answers A LONG TIME AGO! I rarely (if ever) give thumbs down.

I did used to when the comment box was visible, and sometimes even now I do, but I have to wonder if people giving the points for best answer have the time to go back and check.....this is a good question as I have always felt disrespectful not thanking them for choosing my answer, I never thought of sending an email if they allow them, I'm a dumbo...I will always check on that in the future as I am always grateful and feel honored when mine has been chosen...thanks for bringing this up

No, I do thumbs up sometimes usually if they are really good answers...or if they are decent answers but people have thumbs them down....I don't star all that much, more now than I used to.

I do give a lot of thumbs-up....especially (though not exclusively) to my contacts - and I started starring every question I answer quite a while ago now.
