How do I wire wrap a odd shaped stone such as sea glass?

What gauge wire should I use? I'd prefer no glue. My attempts failed miserably, breaking wire, non-secure stone. All help greatly appreciated.

Use 20 gauge wire and a piece of glass that is shaped kind of like a triangle. Have the point facing downwards. Here are some examples.
