The woman was "gang raped" and being punished for it by the state. With friends such as these, does the US need enemies?

It is deplorable, which is a little harsher a view than the American government's qualifier, 'unfortunate'. The Saudi form of Islam is Wahhibism and it is a very harsh form of the religion that rules the Saudi society with an iron fist. I think what is happening and has happened there so often are nothing short of human rights abuses on par with those of any despot. Even Sadam. They treat women no better then the Taliban does (not did, they are still around). But our government will sit by and shrug it off because it is hypocritical when its sense of outrage is trumped by its greed. But that greed will be called 'strategic interests' and the perpetrators of the human rights violations will be called 'our friends and allies in the war on terror', and soon, everyone will become distracted and move on. But this woman will suffer for life as will the young man that was raped along with her. The rapist, the real criminals, will go free. Justice as meted out by one of our dear allies and friends, in this case the Saudis.

Well, according to the doctrines of multi-culturalism, which so much of the western world has embraced, that question can only be asked within the framework of Saudi culture, and, since Saudi culture is honestly rooted in Wahabist Islam, and Wahabist Islam is OK with corporal punishment for such 'crimes,' it's perfectly alright. Moral Relativism means never having to demand someone else say thier sorry.

With it's paltry and often vile selection of 'allies' America certainly doesn't /need/ enemies. But, it still, unquestionably, /has/ enemies.

America is willing to overlook it as long as Saudi Arabia gives them information about terrorists. Islam has really destroy the basic human rights of the women. What kind of father would allow his daughter to be flogged for being raped? Good thing I wasn't born there.

Just another sign of the hypocrisy of the ruling class. Criticizing oppressive theocracies while at the same time turning a blind eye to the same thing happening in our allies' countries. Money talks and bullsh@t walks. The saying couldn't be more true.

My wife is a Moslem.I do not agree with what is happening in the Islamic world. It is very tragic that such beheadings take place and often for only minor things.Yet the U,S.A. has no business interfering with judicial matters in other countries.

If the 'War on Terror' was being fought in Saudi Arabia, as it should be, I would be a Bush supporter.

You expect something different? We allowed them to fly home during 9/11 when US citizens were grounded.

Sounds similar to what all of Bill Clinton's victims got for speaking out against him. A public flogging.
