I'd say Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix are about equal with him.

Most say Jeff Beck is the best playing electric guitar.
Hank Marvin of the Shadows
Mark Knopfler.
But IMO nobody beats Jimmy Page with an acoustic guitar.

I think that it is safe to say that Jimi Hendrix was the greatest guitar player ever, though Jimmy Page would be a very, very, close second

Well, Jimmy was a good studio player, sloppy when live, so personally I think Randy Rhoads kicks Jimmy Page's butt, although, Page was an awesome guitarist.

Jimmy definitely trumps Gilmour in writing ability, though. Heck, a retarded monkey could trump Gilmour in writing ability. He was good for playin' guitar and singin', and nothin' else.

the only one to come close would be fellow former Yardbirds bandmate Eric clapton. both are amazing guitarist
hmm Jerry Garcia, Greg Allman, or Frank Zappa could give him a run for the money as well.......
