I'm did a report for history and I was just wondering, how do people get guns in the US? Could anyone go out and get a gun as long as they don't have a criminial record? Or do they have to register?
Bounty hunters for instance, do they have legal rights to have a gun?

The laws are different depending on where you are. There are Federal laws, every State has it's own State laws, and many cities and counties have their own laws too.
In New York City, for example, it's VERY, VERY difficult to legally buy a gun (though you can buy one for $20 on any subway train in the city) but in rural up-state New York you can buy a long gun from a gunshop for cash very easily.
As a "general" rule, the laws in big cities tend to be much stricter than in rural areas, and they're stricter in the North than the South.
In Texas and Mississippi I think they put them in vending machines :-)

(Just kidding about the vending machines, btw........)

In most states you have to make application to the local law enforcement agency. This could be the county sheriff or the local chief of police. There are various rules, depending upon which state that you reside in, but in general, if you are a person of good character, with no criminal record, you will be issued a permit to buy and own a firearm. There are also federal regulations which come into play, so that while you might be able according to state law to own a firearm, federal law may say that you can not.

You have to register usually, I don't know the laws in other states except in Ca. Some Bounty hunters can carry a concealed weapon. Not all of them. I believe you need a certification, and permit. Not sure in all States.

In Arkansas you can get a rifle or a shot gun at your local walmart. Not hand guns.

Most southern states sell over the counter, but you may not be allowed to transport it to another state. If in doubt, go to a gun show.

You have to apply for a FOID card and pass back ground checks. After you get your card you can purchase a gun.
