Define "Success." The people were successful in over-throwing the monarchy. The short term effects were horrific. Clergy were murdered as were all public officials. In Lyon, women and children were trampled in the streets under the hooves of horses -- there was little regard for life. The long term effects? The 40 hour work week, public water, sanitation (sewage system), public education for the masses, there are a great number of things directly attributed to Napolean.
The government? Before the revolt, was a monarchy. Afterwards, it was supposed to be a democracy but was more or less a dictatorship. Currently, it's a democratic republic.

A total failure>
France was a world power under Luis" 14,15,& 16.
The Terror eliminated the Royal House and the Aristocracy amd the Church from Power, leaving only the 3rd estate, the Commons
They soon were over come by Napoleon who destroyed the power of Frace for a hundred years.
The one shining example from that 3rd estate was The Declaration of the Rights of Man, and within ten years it, and the French Constitution, were relagated to the jutters of Paris, washed away by the blood of thousands.

Why?
Because the vaunted Rights of Man, always compared with the Declaration of Independace and US Constitution, said that those rights were given by the Government of France to the people!
Very noble.
The US Contstitution declared that human trights were given, inalienable, by our Creator, and could NOT be taken away.
The Rights of Man were taken by the French government within 10 years, The US Consti. is still here 230 years later and more relevant than ever. What the government can give, the gov can take away. What God gives can never be taken away!
No, the French Revolution was a dismal failure. Notable, but failed.

France is France, need I say more? This is the country that was taken over by the Nazis in less than a week, the only retatliation they put up was trees alongside the roads so the Krauts had shade to walk in and put out a distress call to Britain and the US to come save their sorry asses.

Depends on who you talk to. Some were better off, some weren't. Once the "Reign of Terror" started, only those in charge were better off and that changed from day to day.
