The computer guys removed the hard drive from an old system. I want to install it in my new computer. Is it as easy as just plugging it in...or should I have the nerds do it for me? The old drive used Windows XP but the new computer has Vista.

Its actually very easy all you have to do is 1 connect the power..(its the 4 pronged plug that comes out of your power supply ..you should have an extra. Then connect one of the grey ribbons to it. When you start your computer up it should be vista ..if its xp ..switch the grey ribbons from one hard drive to another and then restart. ..make sure your power is disconnected before you do anything inside the computer..good luck

Of course it can be added. The programs won't work because they were installed to the old windows that you are not using. The files like your music and pictures will be there and your new viewers can just switch directories to read them.

There is a tiny little plug on the back of the drive that says Master or Slave, according to the pins it is plugged on, according to the label on the drive. that was probably set for master for the old computer. It is probably a wide cable called IDE. You would probably have to set it for "slave" as it would probably share a cable with another thing like your DVD/CD drive. Your new hard drive probably has a smaller cable called SATA .

The wide cable usually has a filled hole in one row in the middle to match a missing pin on the drive, so it only plugs in 1 way.

definite you are able to. in case you open your laptop case, you will see that the two the difficult tension and the CD tension would desire to cables plugged into them. The smaller connector with each and every of the wires working to it fairly is for capability. The extensive ribbon-like cable is for the controller. On each and every ribbon cable there would desire to be a 2d connector. you are able to positioned the 2d tension onto the two of those controllers. additionally connect a capability cable. till now you place the tension in, you will probable would desire to alter a jumper on the difficult tension to allow it know that that's the 2d or "slave" difficult tension. in any different case it is going to confuse the laptop and it won't boot. verify out the top the place the two cables connect. you will many times stumble on a series of four or 5 pairs of cord pins that have a tiny little plastic jumper over between the pairs. usually the pairs would be labled "M" for grasp, "S" for slave, and "CS" for cable opt for. Or there will be a sprint diagram on the tension that checklist the pins. Get some tweezers, and pass the jumper to the "slave" place. After that, positioned the tension in and boot the laptop. optimistically it is going to arise with a sparkling tension letter for you. If it would not boot, attempt shifting the jumper till you stumble on the final putting. (remember that no jumper is additionally a valid putting) As you in basic terms want homestead windows put in right this moment difficult tension, you are able to format the hot tension and use the full 120gb for document storage.
