so i'm making pjs pants in my sewing class. when you put the bobbin in i know you put the string through the tiny hole but when you place the bobbin in the machine does the little hole face up or down? I though it would be down because when i hook the string in that black slot it goes in easyier then when i do it with the small hole faceing upwards. But when the hole is faceing down and i start sewing the bobbin always shoots up and causes this stringy mess but not when i have it faceing up. also when i use the sewing mahchine i'll see stitching on the top but not the bottom and the string comes out. also when im sewing the stitchiing will randomly stop and i'll see long string coming out but not going into the fabric.
help!

When you put the bobbin in the slot thread it through the small hole and then the begging of the thread will be locked down over the metal that holds the bobbin in place so the thread will not slip off. The rest of your problems is because your tension is wrong and will have to be adjusted to the material you are working with .

Hi there,

My name is Mark and I own a Sew-n-Vac shop, I do all the repairs as well. Your question is a bit tricky to answer without knowing what brand and model of machine you are using. From the advice that I have seen given to you everyone is assuming that you have a front load machine. But if you have a top loading machine it will be different. If you have a metal bobbin case that you pull out of the front then you only have to pull the thread (from the bobbin) through the slot and lay it to the side. You shouldnt have any holes to go through per se. As far as where the arm on the case would go, if you look at the front of the machine down where the case goes you shoule see a small notch in the "race" cover. Which is just the piece around the bobbin case. Hope this helps? Again I can be more specific if I know what machine you have.

P.S. Your tensions should not have to be adjusted for different types of fabric if they are funcuining correctly. You may have to use different needles for stretch fabric, heavy materials, etc. But your tensions shouldn't need to be changed after they have been, professionally, balanced.

The hole on the arm wil always face up on the bobbin case. To be completely sure, I would ask your sewing teacher so you don't end up oweing $100.

The reason there is only stitching on the top and not the bottom is becuase the bobbin is placed in the machine wrong.

Since this is a class, the teacher should be the one to help you with this. If not, is there a book with the machine? It will have all the diagrams you need.
