What actually happens to the wood when it rots?

Bacteria and fungi are breaking it down and digesting it. Moisture permits their growth but does not actually cause the rot.

mostly moisture and termites and bacteria. make sure your wood stays dry and give a treatment for termites and carpenter ants. and make sure the area is bacteria free other than that try a wood preservative like thompsons water seal . or boiled liseed oil.

Moisture and if was not properly sealed it can cause early symptoms of rotting!! It sucks, my porch is only a few years old and we already have issues!

Well wood in after all just a plant..Although its a very tough plant.The same forces that act on any plant to break it down into its natural components will act on a piece of untreated wood too.It just takes a lot longer to breakdown bc of its tough structure.

Moisture gets in and isn't able to get out.
