A Hard Day's Night is the better film. It was aesthetically groundbreaking: Dick Lester's cutting style was 30 years ahead of today's MTV. And, because it was the world's first look at the Beatles it has something Help! doesn't: surprise.
That's not to say the Help! is a bad film. It's exactly what was expected, which is not true of their first feature.

I love both of these movies, so I can understand your dilemma. Not real sure why you have to pick which one is better, but to answer a question about the Beatles I'll indulge. Personally, I like "Help!" the best. It's so random that it's hilarious and brilliant. By the time they made "Help!" they had a little more money so it gave them a lot more freedom. They would sit around and say, "Lets go to the Alps". And they would. "I've never been to the Bahamas." "Let's go!". It's a movie I can watch over and over again and never get tired of it...I guess "A Hard Day's Night" is like that too, but I sill like "Help!" the best.
"Red?"
"Red."
"They have to paint me red before they chop me. It's a different religion than ours...I think."

Help! has more of a plot BUT the charm of the Beatles was how they interacted and their off-the-cuff witticisms. For that reason, A Hard Day's Night is the better Fab flick.

Neither is what I call "good". They are just cutsy and if you were a big fan back in the day, thats what you went to see them for. I know I did. I saw Hard Days Night when it premiered, 6 times in just one day. Thats when you could sit in the theatre and watch the movie over & over for 50 cents. Oh those were the days.

A Hard Day's night is absolutely hilarious. Help is pretty funny, but really random too.
