In years past, a gentleman who desired to establish a relationship with a young woman (with the intent of marriage in the future), he would BEGIN the process by approaching HER parents (or other Older Close Relative) and ASK them if he could please get to know her in a public situation (like a meal or a fair or just taking her to the skating rink). The parents then would like to know about the Gentleman (and he would then tell them about himself!) ... and if they approved, he would be talked about to the young lady ... and she would be able to CHOOSE whether to meet him in this public event so that they could talk and get to know each other.

Eventually, if they find themselves compatible enough, they would date ... and then ... eventually, the Gentleman would approach her Parents (or other Close Relative) and ASK Them if they would allow him to marry their Daughter/Sister, etc. Once that permission was granted, then he would ask his intended, and she could either accept or deny.

THAT is what courting is (and was!).
