It is an "illusion" of you. It is only made up of what you "think" you are. And it is also made up of what you "think" about others and the world. Since you can observe the thoughts, you must be separate from what you "think" of you! You are "Being", "Presence". Not the thoughts in mind.

In Freud's version, the Ego is essentially the mean (the average) if the Id and the Super Ego - the three parts of the individual personality. The Id being the part of you driven by self satiating desire; personal urges and self gratifying behaviors represent this part the the personality. It can also be defined as the irrational side. The super Ego is in a sense the opposite - you at your fullest potential, the most rational. The Ego is the combination and can be interpreted as your average person.

Here is an analogy -
Id:Paris Hilton
Ego:Jo Schmo/Jane Do
Super Ego:Mother Theresa

Your Ego is the balance of your Id and Super Ego. Social norms define particular characteristics of these traits and would be considered subjective.

your ego is how you view yourself. if you have a big ego, you think you are so cool and that you are the best thing that ever happened. if you have a small ego, you do not think too highly of yourself.
