I will piggyback that guy. The RJ-45 Ethernet cable has 8 wires and the RJ-11 for dial up has four wires. The Ethernet cable is a little bigger and the port will have one or two light on it. If you don't have the RJ-45 connector on the back. You can buy a card and install one. Best buy would have the parts you need. You have to make sure that you have a open PCI slot on the motherboard, their usually an off white slot. If you don't have an open PCI slot and need a RJ-45 connector You can use a adapter that you can plug in to your USB port. These tend not to work all that well. And your operating system doesn't really matter to connect to the Internet.

You need to have an ethernet connector (RJ-45) on your laptop. It looks like an extra fat telephone cable connector. If you don't have this, the you need to purchase a USB to ethernet device that plug's into your laptop's USB port and supplies an RJ-45 connection.

RJ-45 ethernet cable if you have a cable/dsl modem, if you have dial-up, you will have to use an RJ-11 Phone cord.

Email or IM if you need any help.
