Geeks were originally circus freaks, who did something extreme like eat turkey necks, and then grosser things, while nerds were just people who weren't cool to the "in" crowd, as they were often clumsy, not very macho or hip, and usually did something like read and write a lot; they're usually brainiacs. Nerds were often portrayed as having pocket protectors and broken glasses. Geeks were more hidden.
Now geek is the more lightly used word. If you're into something more than other people are, they might call you a geek. I have a friend who is 30 and collects action figures and comic books. So, he's a "comic book geek". And of course there are the computer geeks.
A nerd is still, to me, someone who knows too much for their own good, maybe they're not all there when it comes to their social skills, and they somehow fit the stereotype of broken glasses, clumsy, and broken pens.

A nerd is the one everyone beats up, and nobody really likes.
A geek is the one who knows a lot about things people never really cared about, and is an electronic junkie.

A geek is someone that says and does silly things because it makes them and others laugh but is able to control this.
A nerd on the other hand is very unaware of how "odd" what they say and do is preserved by others.

-Geek is a common term for someone who is obsessed by their computer, and has achieved a high level of expertise in their chosen area. ...
-Nerd is a computer expert by aptitude and not mere training. Usually male, under the age of 35 and socially inept; a person whose tremendous skill with operating or designing computer hardware or software is exceeded only by his, rarely her, passionate love of the technology.
-Geek is a term similar to nerd, but slightly less pejorative in tone.
