He was probably just being a jerk and trying to unnerve you (obviously, it worked). No gay guy I have ever known just goes around grabbing crotches. It's generally straight guys who are being jerks who do that crap.

A pat on the butt is a greeting or a congratulations. The crotch grab was just him being an A-hole.

Oh my, its not my brother in law is it? That isnt normal, a hug, a pat on the back, shaking hands, a quick nod are satisfactory ways of greeting, not a quick grab downstairs.

I don't know about other folks, but I would have retaliated with violence of my own for that. That was assault, pure and simple. Nobody has a right to grab you in that way, and the more people would cold **** or otherwise send cretins to who this to the emergency room, the better.
