I think that when you are in a relationship, it involves compromise. You usually check in with your partner on certain things.

I think that when people say they "value their independence" what they are really saying is that they don't want to answer to anybody for their choices. They want to do what they want to do when they want to do it.

I also think that there is a certain percent of the population who just are happier single.

This means that a person can do good by themselves and do not need no help if it will make them do bad in life. Independence means here that if the other party cannot come producing then, what the point of marrying that person.

Some people just aren't meant for that sort of 24/7 commitment. They might enjoy spending "some" time with a significant other, but have a definite, distinctive need to be alone which would not exist in marriage. Others are never content with what they have, and are intent on trying different things, and going through different partners, racking up as many "points" as possible. Others still just haven't found the right person, and don't want to limit their options just for the sake of "settling down".

It would be different for every couple. Some people may say that they miss being able to make a decision, ( like a financial decision), without first having to consult another person. I also know some married couples who think they have lost their individual identity once they are married. Gifts are often given for both and not the individual, when you speak about a married couple often people refer to them as "they" instead of their first names...etc..etc...

I believe it means that that person is very independent, and of course marriage is a shared bond, shared finances (most of the time), you become one practically. I find that a lot of people jump into marriage before they really know what they want, obviously this person knows that they aren't ready. So instead of getting married and divorced over and over again, they take their time. The problem with people today is they think that they are supposed to be married by 21-24, and really it's when THEY are ready. Hope that helps you : )

It simply means that some people don´t want to be emotionally dependent on others. There are certain types of people who are better off not being married.Don´t forget that marriage is a man made institution for the purpose of assuring property rights. Adam and Eve were without benefit of wedlock.

They mean their ability to be happy and fulfilled without a spouse. That's why I'm not getting married — I think it would be less fulfilling for me than singlehood.

Sharing one's life & decisons that affect your & their future is a major step that necessariy limits your independence. All relationships, unless you control all aspects of the relationship, will limit your freedom.

I think they are afraid of compromise. When one is single, they can do as they please. These people don't want to lose that.

At least these people understand their own nature, so they don't drag others into their selfish little world. They know they're selfish, and they are perfectly happy.

Many people prefer not feeling any sort of obligation to another person and like it when they can come and go as they please. That's why they stay single.
