I just moved and where I moved to has this odd tree in the front yard. It has rows of long thin leaves, fuzzy branches that break off easily in fall, and produces red cone-shaped clusters that point upward. It also reproduces by tubing roots I believe.

Sounds like you are describing a Sumac Tree, there are many varieties, I would suggest a Yahoo! Images search using the link below to get you started.

Hi! Look up Sumac on the web. I believe you will get a picture of your tree.
There are different kinds of Sumac, but the tall tree kind is not poisonous. Just beautiful

Staghorn sumac ( Rhus typhina ) sounds like the beast you are describing. Beautiful but aggressive growth habit. Gorgeous fall color.

sounds like a sumac. i've had locust not that unless it has THORNS i called those "devil trees"......
