i've heard conservatives tell me we shouldn't tax the rich more because that would just be unnecessary punishment. if that's punishment, what do you think about the fact that much of the 95% rest of the country pays more than twice that percent?

making them pay the same as everyone else is not "punishment". making them pay less than everyone else is a reward that they don't deserve. (and by pay less i mean percentage wise).

David R, that's total taxes, not the ratio of their income that goes to the government.

Your question seems more like a statement than a question, but I'll answer it. I agree with you. The rich use more of the country's resources and infrastructure to generate their wealth. Many rich people try to imply that they are "self-made men" but that is baloney. Their work force uses the education system, their trucks use the roads, the military protects their oil and businesses, etc. etc. The rich should pay more, and even billionaires like Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have stated their agreement with this principle.

I am self employed I work 70 hours a week, I make less then 100k a year. So I pay roughly 33% of my income in taxes plus I pay my own SS.

Now I know people who sit at home and live off of the interest of their savings and play with stocks and they pay the least.

This is fair how?

Using today dollars until Regan people who made over 3 million a year, 91% of it went to tax's. There was no CEO making 120 million a year yet because all but 9% of it went to the gov. So there was trickle down effect. Real Wages were better. People has benfits, and job security. The company showed more of a profit so it went to its share holders. That is how trickle down economics works... This was back in the glory days when we still made stuff in this country. Back when we had a strong middle class. But now with this tax system the more you make the more you keep!!!

What would be wrong with a "Flat tax" across the board or a "Consumption Tax" The more you spend, the more you pay in taxes. More dollars, not more of a %. So if I spend $20'000 this year, and some rich guy spends $20'000'000, we both pay the same percentage, he just pays more dollars. Percentages are fair to everyone. When a multi-millionaire complains because he pays $30'000 in taxes, it may sound like a lot to you and I, but its probably little to him percentage wise. To some, that's half their check! So, percentage is fair to everyone. There are always a few exceptions to each rule.

I think you misunderstand. People are not suggesting that only the rich pay the 15%. They are suggesting that everyone pay the same tax rate at 15 %. This would simplify taxes.
Currently, the more you make the higher percentage you pay in taxes for example. My numbers are hypothetical.:
If you make $10000 you pay 10% ($1000) and if you make $1000000 you pay 30%($300000). What they are saying is that it is unfair that the rich pay a higher percentage. If everyone pays 15 percent the numbers would be:
You make $10000 you pay 15%(1500), if you make $1000000 you pay 15% ($150000).
So the rich are saying, they already pay more money, so it isn't fair that they shoud be paying a higher percentage as well.

How much do you pay. and by the way, the top marginal rate is over 40%, not 15%. How fair is that?

Agreed. Its too complicated for the left to understand. they do no longer likely care if its particularly honest. they only like it to sound honest to assuage Buffet and his secretary. issues are easily too complicated. it could be super to have an much less complicated tax code. it is used to control each and every thing at present.

Why do they not deserve the reward for their hard work?

The rich will pay more anyway, simply because they make more. There is no need to raise taxes for them.

Who deserves the reward, the slacker cashier at McDonald's, or the hard working CEO? The answer is clear.

everyone needs to pay the same amount, or according to their income, but the rich should pay just like the rest of the people, I think it's around 45%, thats what it feel like anyway. and they should get rid of the gift tax, that is so unfair.
