HELL NO. Find another mechanic. Thermostats don't cost THAT much to replace.

No.

A thermostat replacement on your vehicle, according to Alldata, takes 3.8 hours. At a shop rate of $84 per hour (my rate in Southern California) , labor would be $319.20. The part , according to Alldata, is $18.63. Parts and labor=$337.83 plus tax on the part.

$580.00 is excessive. Shop around.

Advice to the loudmouths who say it is an easy job. Try it.

On a Saturn L300, it is not. 3.8 hours shop time is not twisting a gooseneck and you're done. '54 Chevy, maybe, but not a Saturn L300.

Let the professionals give USEFUL advice.

The thermostat is $8.00 at autozone, and takes about 15 minutes to change. It is 2 bolts to loosen, lift up the gooseneck, pull out the thermostat, put a new gasket on the gooseneck, drop in the thermostat, put the gooseneck back, tighten the 2 bolts, re attach radiator hose, and you are done. To the so-called "professional" I HAVE done it on a Saturn L300, and it has only taken me 45 minutes. This is why insurance, and parts prices are absolutly ridiculous. Because "PROFESSIONALS" and MOST "ASE" certified mechanics cant even turn a wrench without consulting their books. Shop labor is stupid, book hours are a joke, you know it and I know it, If it takes you 3.8 hours to change a thermostat in ANY car, you should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, be working in an automtive shop.

It could cost that much if it is made of gold:-)

But then again - why would you need a thermostat made of gold???

Way tooooo much - should be less than $100.

They are worth about 20 bucks in Canada, I'm sure the US is the same. 2 bolts to change it, do it yourself
