Oh, I think this is something that anyone who's ever had a job for more than two minutes can relate to. The cause of ANY stress is our body's hormonal reaction(s) to a situation that we find unfavorable. We are hunter-gatherers as far as our physiology is concerned, and our sympathetic nervous system is made for handling the stress of that lifestyle (read: brief confrontations with predators). However, the lifestyles that we lead nowadays and the constant feeling of being stressed keep that sympathetic nervous system response going and going, without much rest in between. Long-term, these hormones are detrimental to health. If we change our attitudes and how we feel about these stressors, however, we can minimize the stress that they cause. The power is all within us. Keep work at work, simple as that. Put things in perspective- is getting your undies in a bunch every two minutes at work or every two feet in the car or every time someone takes too long at the ATM really necessary?
Also, too much junky food and too little exercise is stressful. But look at how many people eat nothing but crap and never exercise.

You can work when you are tired, but when under stress best to stop.

You will often find that what takes you about 1 hour to do under stress. You can do in about 5 minutes the following day when you have had a good rest.

Tiredness and stress are completely different things.

I was under such stressful conditions ay my job, it made my Lupus jump from Discoid [mild skin] to Systemic [full organ assault] Unreasonable expectations, my boss was one of those guys who didn't want anyone working for him that had "domestic issues." A domestic issue to him was anyone who was married, had kids, pets, or anything else that took your complete focus away from him and his needs. A real arrogant, prideful, pompous jackass. He dumped all his work on me and then went to a 3 day work week being unreachable on critical matters... Telling me it was my responsibility to get it done even though I was not qualified to do his job... It started physically. My knees hurt so bad. So I took Advil. They hurt more, so I took more. I was in really bad shape and my boss was threatening to fire me because I wasn't coming in. I couldn't sleep. I was in great pain. I started to get depressed about the impossible situation I was in. Then my wrists started hurting. I couldn't turn them, or lift anything. But, I really needed that job. I did the best I could. Before I knew it, I was taking over 30 Advil a day. I went out on Medical leave and was terminated 30 days later. The termination also cancelled my medical benefits. No unemployment either. SOL. Oh, I could carry Cobra at some 600.00 a month... 1 year later I was in the hospital after 2 prior attempts to get admitted. After almost dying, I have learned that you are the only one who can/will take care of you. Nothing and no one is worth losing your health or your mind over. I was surprised. I have worked in very stressful environments throughout my life. The difference was - this guy - my boss, was a real piece of work. Absolutely no regard for anyone or anything else except himself and how his employees could make him shine. Period. Can work related stress make your sick? I know it can kill. It almost killed me. Be careful not to let it take hold of you. Once it begins to spiral, you will not realize it until it is too late.

For me, an work activity that produces anxiety is stress.

So as not to bring stress home, you may do what I do.
I put an activity between work and home. I may go window
shopping, attend mass, see a movie, have a short chat / drink with friends.

I think it is easy to say that you shouldn't bring your work home with you (physically, metally, emotionally), but much harder to actually adhere to that advice. Depending on your job, of course. I think that work related stress can have many causes- unfinished projects, impending deadlines, not liking co-workers, working with difficult clients, etc. etc. I've definitely experienced plently of it. I still haven't figured out how to "leave it at work". Talking about a stressful day with friends helps me, also looking forward to vacation time.

Yes, I get it around May of every year. I am a teacher & thats when the ear is about to come to an end. With exams, report cards, last minute make ups and redos. All I want to do to curl up in a corner and cry.

Yes, I had a boss who wanted to get rid of me.
He made my work-life a living hell on earth.
Unreasonable expectations, unfair evaluations.
I had been working there too long to fire me.
They eventually gave me early retirement.
But I became obese & diabetic from the stress.
Of course I cannot medically establish that.

Ive been there and dont that. I wore the wrong hat. I thought that by keeping real busy I would be able to succeed. But I grew up and learned sometimes you gotta relax and get back to your family, They are the ones who care for you, to help you through.
