A good spray gun is about $500ish, a big enough air compressor is around $1000.
Depending on what condition the car is in now, all your common tools to take it apart/put it back together again... $400 to $500.
A good DA sander $100, scuff pads, sandpaper, masking tape, paper... another $300 or so.
Basecoat and candy additive for a complete car... $500-$1000 depending on what line you use
Clearcoat/hardener/reducer... $250-$500
Wetsanding paper/ buffer and buffing pads/compounds another $250-$400 depending on the products.
And the talent to use all those tools in a fashion that will give you a great paint job??
Priceless, years of experience.
For everything else there's Mastercard :)
I've been in the body and paint business for 13 years, trust me, take it to a reputable shop if you want it to look nice.

Water separators big enough compressor 5 hp or larger 240volt not to make Lot's of water sanders air files buffers and sand paper primers Kandy Color is applied over silver or gold depends on what reflection you are looking for. Everything you are going to do is flammable cancer causing and very bad when inhaled. Please wear a good respirator. I have painted many cars before I knew what the dust and spray was doing to my lungs. Your investment in gravity feed spray gun gear air equipment and the necessary materials woulds cost as much as the paint job would cost to have done professionally. But by learning spray on paint application you will be able to do more paint jobs to get back your investment. Just learning to properly mask off a car is a lesion in it's self When you spray Kandy colors you will mask spray primer fill dents pull all the masking and re mask for first gold color pull all the paper color sand re mask apply the first second and third Kandy color coats Pull all the paper color sand again then re mask and put on the final clear coat. Very hard work. Then sand the clear with 1000 grit then 1500 grit then machine buffer the entire car with up to three grades of buffing compounds. Professionals take up to a month to do a good Kandy Color paint job and use good materials that cost lots of cash.
My best reccomendation is not to learn how to paint on your ride. Learn from the best painters in your area get a job there washing and detailing take on masking next then body work and only after learning each step of the process then paint your first car. Great painters learind what they do over years and years of work.

Listen to the above posts.
U cn do t chpr f U hre a pro.
Your investment, as a DIY= about 200K: Equipment, permits, a shop, rent or property tax on said shop, supplies, utilities, environmental impact studies, bribes (sorry, "permits" as discussed above), payroll studies, Affirmative Action Training, Sexual Harrassment Sensitivity Training , Zero Tolerance Awareness Training, Substance Abuse Awareness Training, Managing For Success Training, Welcoming Your Customers Training, How To Be Profitable Training, The Chaos Of Commerce Training.
Paying a pro= a whole lot less. We got you covered on that stuff.
This formula, plugging in the numbers, works for just about any vehicle repair job.

Most places now you also need an EPA certified spray booth which has air that is water filtered so no hazardous chemicals escape into the atmosphere. That alone, plus the operating certification, will make the cost of the tools pale in comparison. The days of doing it in your garage or driveway are long gone. Most towns would have you in the poky before you finished the primer coat.
