is there any other way a website/software can identify my computer besides IP address?

not neccessarily a website, but i downloaded a software, can that software identify my computer by downloading my computer hardware specs? ie. my harddrive uniq id, or serial #s for other hardware and that info is sent to them, even if i have a diff IP, can they still know that is the same computer i am using ??? is that possible?

yes it can - yr computer serial number is unique only to yr computer - microsoft uses it to verify if you installed yr windows os on only one or more than one computer - it maches it always during registration process with windows product key - if both match you're allowed to install or re-install windows any number of times (it means you're installing or re-installing windows always on same computer and windows license is per 1 computer so that is ok) if they don't you're not allowed to install it
(it means you're installing windows on different computer and that is not allowed by microsoft)

Microsoft does that for Vista.

Websites can use Cookies to identify the computer.

My friend had an and experience with a RAM management software that he got from some one as a birthday gift it was a pirated software and he didn't know. He just put the serial and connected to the net and the program got the permission to connect to Internet from firewall and then a message came saying
"You are using a pirated copy by accident or purpose. Your ISP, computer Id, computer name etc has been sent to the company for verification."

To protect your computer you can block some soft-wares from connecting to the Internet at least they won't call their server and check the validity of the software etc.

hey Matt ? we don't use an IP handle to discover a working laptop or pc. An IP handle is given to a working laptop or pc or gadget to allow get right of entry to to the internet. A MAC handle is given to discover the pc. that's the actual handle. that's the only ingredient that makes it unique from yet another gadget. So shall we are saying you have 2 of the comparable computers, no longer something is different however the MAC handle.

SRI is correct. Clean your cookie file on a regular basis. They are the spies for the net keeping track of the websites you visit. And that is why you get bombarded with e-mail and spam you could care less for.
