I have a 1997 Ford f-350 powerstroke, 4x4, auto, xlt, 4 door long bed, single rear wheel. I use the truck to pull my 24 foot goose neck horse trailer. What I am asking is how do I go about swapping my automatic transmission to a 5 speed manual transmission? I do not like pulling with the automatic transmission, I have already put one transmission in the truck due to the heavy weight I pull on really hard hills. It does not seem like the Auto will gear down fast enough to keep from loosing your momentum. I have thought about trading my truck for a manual transmission truck but mine is exactly what I want minus the Auto. CAN ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT IT WOULD TAKE TO SWAP TRANNY'S FROM AUTO TO MANUAL. PARTS, TIME, MONEY, AND HOW DIFFICULT IT WILL BE... Thanks for your answers

It'd cost you more money and time than it's worth. You'll need the pedal setup from a standard the same year plus the tranny, bell housing, driveshaft, pressure plate, clutch plate, clutch disc, pilot bearing, throwout bearing and linkage. You'd really need to purchase a wrecked standard truck and strip it. Lot of $$$$$$ and a heck of a lot of work.

To add to Mustanger's EXCELLENT answer, you would also need to change the PCM (the calibration is different between to auto and manual versions), and all associated wiring, plus the fabrication work involved with cutting a hole in the floor. Just for your information, the manual transmission versions of these trucks utilized a "dual mass" type flywheel that were notorious for internal bearing failure that would result in catastrophic damage, requiring EVERYTHING in the clutch system to be replaced, when this occured. Also, those clutch parts are extremely expensive. If you are towing heavy loads on a regular basis, you would be well advised to install an auxillary transmission fluid cooler (HEAVY DUTY VERSION), as heat is every automatic transmission's worst enemy, which I'm sure you are probably well aware by now. If you are insistent upon having a manual transmission, sell your truck or trade it in for one so equipped. Believe me, you'll be saving yourself A LOT of time, money and grief. Hope this helps.
