Actually it is a sesamoid bone. It does function to protects the front of the knee joint. There are two sesamoid bones in each foot at the bottom attached to the big toe.

First of all, do you know what a "search engine" is? Why did you waste 5 points on something that takes 10 seconds to type -- "patella bone".
Pain associated with the kneecap:
The patella, or kneecap, is one of three bones, along with the tibia (shin bone) and femur (thigh bone), that make up the knee joint. All of these bones are covered with a layer of cartilage at points where their surfaces come into contact. Furthermore, the patella is wrapped up inside a tendon. This tendon connects the quadriceps muscle of the thigh to the shin bone (tibia) below the knee joint.
The patella is important functionally because it increases the leverage of the knee joint. From a mechanical perspective, the patella allows for an increase of about 30% in strength of extension (kicking) of the leg at the knee joint.
The most common symptom of patellar irritation is pain associated with prolonged sitting and descending stairs. The reason the pain is more severe when descending stairs rather than climbing is due to the mechanics of the knee joint.

cooked bones splinter. Never feed cooked bones. Rawhides are also bad for dogs. Raw bones do not splinter, however.. be careful of the size. If the bone is small enough that the dog may try to swallow it whole, it poses a chocking hazard. I wouldnt offer a great dane a chicken leg or wing for example.. offer a larger peice to encourage chewing. Large weight bearing bones are ok.. but they need to be meaty! Its the act of ripping and tearing meat that cleans the teeth. Once the meat is stripped, discard the bone. The large weight bearing bones can break teeth.
