Because our 'glorious' founding fathers never fully trusted us and left the real king-making responsibility to a group of insiders who would one day overrule the will of the people and screw us all into having George Bush become president over 200 years later.

Just my opinion folks...put the gun away!

AnnieF is correct, but there is more to it. The Electoral College was part of the large-state/small-state dispute. The large-state/small-state dispute was really about slavery. The reason the founders were careful to give small states more power than their population warrants was that some of those small-population states were the agricultural southern states, and they would not ratify a constitution that would grant the new government the popular-vote power to abolish slavery, and without those states, there would be no Constitution. This was the Constitution's tragic compromise that delayed the decision on slavery until the Civil War. Even still, today, "states' rights" usually stands in opposition to individual civil rights; or at best, deferring to states' rights means delaying a final decision on a controversial constitutional question, such as the legality of abortion or same-sex marriage.

The electoral college is part of a representative government, which allows more power to the states, which was a big issue in the begining era of our country.

Don't quote me here, but I remember from highschool, or junior high, listening to a teacher tell us that it was there because the average person of the day wasn't very educated (as today), so they needed a body of educated peoples to make sure the elected presedent could actually fulfill his duties for America.

Problem is... I think one of the hardest tasks of our day is to separate the intelligent from the idiots that only know how to look pretty.

Hillary doesn't fit either of those, because she is neither intelligent (the whole girl thing...) nor is she attractive.

I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE'S WINNING THE POLLS

WHAT HAS THIS COUNTRY COME TO

or should I say... what has the Media led us to become...

The purpose of the electorial college is to give the people in smaller states an equal voice in the election. Otherwise just a couple of highly populated states could elect a president--maybe even one state if the population there increased enough. Wouldn't you just love for the voters of California choose your president? Thanks, but no thanks on a President Nancy Pelosi.

To give the brainless masses near zero power over the Executive branch. They had the house of representatives to protect their voice. Checks and Balances, mate.
