The American Civil War. And, despite common misconceptions, the main cause of the war was not slavery. The South seceded because of slavery, but the North were not fighting the war in order to abolish slavery. The North was fighting the war because it believed that it was illegal for the South to secede. Lincoln once said that if freeing all the slaves would have won the war, he would have done it. But if legallizing slavery in all states would have won the war, he would have done that too. The important thing was to preserve the Union. It wasn't until people stopped losing interest in the Northern cause that Lincoln made the Emancipation Proclamation, and changed the war from a revolution to a crusade against slavery. Once he declared the slaves to be free, the abolitionists, and the major European powers, all joined the North's side. But if the fate of the nation hadn't been at stake, Lincoln would never have freed the slaves. Although he thought slavery was a moral and political wrong, he was a racist, and believed blacks to be inferior to whites.
